At Razorback CrossFit we are given the privilege of coaching an amazing group of athletes.  We find pride in being alongside an athlete to coach and encourage them from the time they join CrossFit to each accomplishment they achieve, whether it be in the gym or not.  We strive to deliver a program that provides a route for our athletes to succeed and it shows when an athlete puts in 110% every training session to ensure they are hitting their goals.

For the November installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Will Loggins. Will joined a CrossFit gym in early 2016. Initially, his goal was to try something new with fitness and
to have an activity that he and his fiancé could do together. She spoke highly of her experience
with CrossFit and Will was intrigued.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"Although I do not remember my first CrossFit workout, I do recall the structure of the workout. The class began with a series of stretching and warming up exercises. Then we progressed to a strengthening exercise, followed by the WOD. The first class not only surprised me, but inspired me as the amount and pace of the exercises performed was like nothing I had ever pushed myself to do before. Not a second was wasted and the coaches pushed us forward until the end."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"What I enjoy most about CrossFit is the blend of strength, endurance, and agility. It is the
epitome of the most well-rounded athlete and makes me feel like I’m getting the most out of
fitness."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"My favorite CrossFit workout is “Helen” (400 meter sprint, 21 kettlebell swings, 12 pull-ups – x 3 rounds). This workout does not require strategy or much brain power, it's just balls to the wall. This workout is also a great one to repeat to see the improvement I’ve made."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"Since starting CrossFit, I feel stronger and more well-rounded in my fitness."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"Goals that I’ve accomplished include better form on Olympic lifts and an improvement in my
cardiovascular health. Future goals goal include improving on strength and agility/flexibility."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"CrossFit has helped reduce stress, connect more with my fiancé through fitness, and has
improved how my body feels on a day-to- day basis."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"The advice I’d give to someone new to CrossFit includes finding the gym that’s right for you. It's important to find coaches that are experienced, knowledgeable, and who motivate you. CrossFit will change your life for the better, as long as you are safe and are taught proper techniques. CrossFit is not only an exercise, but also a community and lifestyle."

We are so proud of all of our athletes and the commitment to their goals and their health every day at Razorback CrossFit. The determination and hard work is displayed when our athletes become healthier, stronger, quicker, and develop their overall fitness. This incredible group of athletes in our community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better every day. We are extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our October Member Spotlight, we introduce Dick Patterson. Dick is 72 years young and joined Razorback CrossFit at the beginning of June while searching for exactly what he wants to reach for. He is the epitome of what we do at Razorback CrossFit. Great things can happen when we strive to make people better by helping them believe in themselves, and by surrounding them with other people who believe.

Our athletes at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft are an amazing bunch. They come in day after day to crush their goals and work on being the best possible versions of themselves. We are incredibly proud of all of the hard work and dedication that each of them display.

For our July Member Spotlight, we introduce Tim Barnett. Tim started CrossFit last year.

"For as long as I can remember, all I've ever really wanted was to be a super hero. I grew up a swimmer. As a small child, I would look to the great physical feats performed by my heroes and dream that one day that would be me.

About a year ago, I unexpectedly became very very ill. I was losing alarming amounts of weight and was in excruciating pain. Sparing many unpleasant details, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, which is essentially an inflammatory bowel disease. Severity of the disease varies, but it is chronic and is typically considered very debilitating. It comes in painful waves called "flare ups" and in my case, a flare up actually brought me quite close to death. As the weeks and months went by, I felt my body wasting away and found myself having to face that I may always feel this physically weak and broken. Eventually, the flare-up quieted down and I began the long journey to rebuild myself.

This is where CrossFit comes into play. While everyday was a challenge, CrossFit showed me that I didn't have to settle with being weak and broken. It allowed me to feel life in my body once again and push myself in ways that I hadn't felt in some time. I grew stronger each week as I learned new skills and pushed myself in new ways. There was a community of good people around me, all working hard and encouraging me, not because they knew my struggle but simply because that's the kind of people they are.

Through choosing to master your weaknesses together in the WOD each day, you become a stronger person and a better friend. CrossFit has given me the confidence that I thought was completely lost through my battle with Ulcerative Colitis. While I may always have this disease, I now know that it hasn't beaten me. I can be a superhero again and I credit much of that to Foxcroft and Razorback CrossFit."

Our athletes at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft commit to achieving their goals and improving their health. We are very proud of the determination and hard work that each of them display as they become healthier, stronger, quicker, and develop their overall fitness.  This incredible group of athletes in our community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better in all aspects of their lives.  We are extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to accomplish their goals.

For our June Member Spotlight installment, we introduce Walt Howard. Walt was first introduced to CrossFit in February of 2013 when Frank Lawrence pitched it to him at a Super Bowl party. He thought it sounded like something he would enjoy.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"I remember it had squats and I could not walk for a week. Wasn’t sure what I had gotten myself into."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"The way we get a total workout, weights, cardio, as well as mobility all in 1 hour."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"Box jumps and double unders. They work well for a tall guy."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"Just an overall healthier lifestyle."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"Main goal has been and will continue to be not to get hurt. Knowing what I can and can’t do and making sure to stick to it."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"Just like with any exercise program being in decent shape just makes life more enjoyable. Especially the older you get."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"Don’t overdo it. Take your time getting accustomed to the lifts and then gradually go up in weight."

We are so proud of all of our athletes and their commitment to reaching goals and optimal health at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft. Determination and hard work is displayed when our athletes become healthier, stronger, quicker, and improve their overall fitness.  This incredible group of athletes in our CrossFit family is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better every day.  As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our April installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Sara Hendricks Batcheller. Sara started CrossFit 6 or 7 years ago. She was going to the LRAC Physical Therapist and she told her that her core was weak and that she needed to go to CrossFit. "So I did. I still can’t believe I did because it is so out of my comfort zone. I have never been very athletic. Always B-Team. But I loved it. And still do."

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"My first CrossFit workout involved Turkish Get-ups. That’s all I remember. I spent the entire class staring at the kettlebell looming over my head thinking that at any moment I was about to crush my face in."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"It’s always different. I don’t get bored. That is my problem with exercise. I get bored. But every CrossFit class is different and always doable. Even if the class involves something that I cannot do, the coaches come up with a good workout that involves moves I can do. I also love that I have a coach helping me along the way. If I was to go out on my own and start slinging weights around, I know it would not be good. But in CF you have great coaching. It’s comforting and empowering because the coaches will also push you out of your comfort zone if they think you are ready. I love the people in my class. It’s amazing that you can bond so much over burpees and pull-ups, but you do!"

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"Pull-ups. I am working on kipping pull-ups right now. I am unbelievably sore afterwards (which makes me feel like I got a lot accomplished). You can really see your progress because you start with a thick band for help, then move to a thinner band as you get better at the pull-ups."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"I am stronger. When I am able to go consistently, my body looks toned and strong. I feel better because I think about exercise, food, and sleep more regularly. I am also calmer and more relaxed throughout the day."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"My next goal is to be able to do pull-ups without a band! Honestly, my most recent goal was to start attending classes regularly again. Baby #3 caused a glitch in my workouts, but I have started attending regularly again and am so happy to be back."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"I think I am just better at life when I feel strong and healthy. I am in a better mood and am more patient with my kids. I hurt my back (carrying baby incorrectly) so being more aware of my body and how I am lifting things and carrying myself has helped heal my back."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"At first, it is likely going to be awful. A lot of the moves are awkward and take a lot of practice. Other people will be at a higher level than you and you have to be ok with starting slow and building up. But everyone starts out that way! And everyone I have met is so gracious when new people are starting out. Because we have all been new. But then you will start getting the moves and adding weight and it’s so much fun. I still can’t believe I like it as much as I do. You always get to be at your own place in CrossFit. Wherever you are at that moment is just fine…you start going from there."

We are so proud of all of our athletes and the commitment to their goals and their health every day at Razorback CrossFit. Their determination and hard work is displayed as our athletes become healthier, stronger, quicker, and develop their overall fitness.  This incredible group of athletes in our growing community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better every day.  As coaches, we are extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our February installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Joanna Gregg. Joanna joined Razorback CrossFit in February of 2016 after moving to Little Rock. She first started CrossFit in the summer of 2012. She was really into running at the time and ran anywhere from 3-6 miles daily. But running had become monotonous to her and really wasn’t challenging anymore because she really had no desire to run longer distances. She got a Groupon email about a CrossFit class and she bought it. One month of unlimited classes… and so it began.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"The VERY first workout I did was 3 rounds of 400m run, 500m row. Since I was all cardio before starting, this workout didn’t really phase me and I thought I was going to be good at this whole CrossFit thing. The SECOND workout I did was 21-15-9 hang power clean, hand stand push-up. Hold up, turns out I am not good at CrossFit AT ALL and actually have no idea what either of these movements are. I went to work the next day with ice packs on my shoulders because I hurt so bad. These were muscles I had not come close to working, EVER. Surprisingly my thoughts were that I wanted more. I went almost every day with 1-2 rest days a week that whole month I had purchased and signed up for a membership directly after."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"First and foremost I love the physical challenge of CrossFit. But along with that I love the community. I love the 2 of these things together. I love hitting a horrible workout with my friends and pushing each other to do more than you would ever do alone or even in a class where you are 1 of 30 people. I love the fact that I have a coach helping me every time I workout and I love that I can also translate the things we learn in class into workouts for myself outside of class at home in my garage, or for my family or other people who want to try something different and step outside their comfort zone. I could go on but you asked for one thing and I gave 16 already."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"I don’t actually have any one workout that comes to mind for a workout I love (I could tell you a few I hate, hah). I love any workout with a barbell but also some cardio like rowing or double unders or burpees mixed with heavy cleans."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"The major change I have noticed is that I am comfortable, confident even, about my body and my fitness. I used to run and think I needed to be thinner or faster or blah, blah, you get the point. CrossFit is so empowering as a female. To be able to be strong and for it to be a good thing that other people see you doing something they can’t do and are impressed by your ability, that’s cool."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"Hmmm goals, I should make some. To be honest after coming back from having a baby I was super discouraged. It felt like taking such a big step backward after all the hard work I had done but now I have gotten to where I like just coming in and working hard everyday. My goal is to not put too much pressure on myself to be more than I can be. But if I had to pick an actual goal I guess I would like to improve my gymnastics skills. It’s just something I push aside and don’t practice much and that is evident in my workouts!"

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"We move around a lot for my husband’s job and my CrossFit community has been a lifesaver. I have made some of the best friends I have ever had at each gym where I have been a member. Every time we are told we are moving the first thing I do is look up the CrossFit gyms nearby and hope there are as many awesome people there as the one I am leaving. And also being able to push a stroller and simultaneously carry a 40 pound car seat through the airport. That’s an indispensable life skill CrossFit has afforded me."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"That’s tough how about, DO IT!!!! Or at least give us a try! I hear people tell me all the time “I could never do that”. And the truth is at this point you may not be able to do most of the things we do in CrossFit but that’s the best part of just starting out, you will be amazed at the things you can accomplish (and the amount of soreness your body can feel). If you had told me almost 5 years ago that I would be doing pull-ups and handstand push ups I would have laughed and probably thought that day would never come."

We are so proud of all of our athletes and the commitment to their goals and their health every day at Foxcroft and Razorback CrossFit. They display determination and hard work and in turn, our athletes are becoming healthier, stronger, quicker, and developing their overall fitness.  This incredible group of athletes in our growing community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better every day.  As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our February Member Spotlight, we introduce Jill Hartsfield. Jill began CrossFit in February of 2013 after a dear friend of hers was already hooked. Her friend thought she would just love the community, atmosphere, and the never-ending challenges of a new workout every day.

What your first CrossFit workout was?

"I don’t remember what my first workout was, but I vividly remember thinking I wasn’t going to be able to walk to my car afterwards. Yet that wasn’t the last time I remember having that exact thought after a workout. My dear friend that invited me didn’t quite tell me just how challenging this CrossFit thing was going to be. However, she did know my weakness, I can never say no. Even after all that, she is still one of my best friends!!"

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I had to take a two year break from CrossFit, and I love how supportive the coaches are now that I am back. They are quick to help modify a workout to my skill level. And the people…it is such a great community. I like that we hold each other accountable for showing up, and we have a good time while we are there."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"Not wallballs!! Probably the rower or any of the squat lifts. Probably anything but wallballs."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"I definitely have more energy, and I’ve noticed I have had more stamina to finish a workout. My flexibility has a long way to go, but I can tell a difference in just the few months I have been back."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"Showing up for class was a pretty solid accomplishment for me! My goals…. I really want to improve to core and upper body strength."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"I can really tell a difference in how I handle stress and juggling a busy schedule. If I can work a class in, the rest of my day seems to flow smoother. (That or I am so exhausted by the end of the day, I forget how crazy my day actually was!)

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"Oh my gosh, just go. BUT go more than once. You have to give the variety of the workouts a shot. This is the most welcoming community of people that are quick to offer encouragement and remind you that everyone once had their starting point with CrossFit too."

January Member Spotlight

We are so proud of our athletes at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft for all of the hard work and determination they put in every day to become the healthiest possible versions of themselves. It is very exciting to see everyone get stronger, quicker, and develop their overall fitness. As our community grows, one part stays the same; we have a phenomenal group of athletes that are committed to not only improving themselves, but also to helping each other become better athletes. We take great pleasure in the opportunity that, we as coaches, are given to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For the January installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce a “Power Couple”, Juan Carlos and Carolina. They both started CrossFit in September of 2015. Juan Carlos was looking for a structured fitness program that was likable to both of them, and decided on CrossFit after a friend, who had done CrossFit for over a year, told him he was feeling better than when he was 25 years old. He then convinced Carolina to join and they both liked it a lot.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

Juan Carlos (JC): I do not recall the entire workout but I remember having dumbbell thrusters in it. I remember coach Chris telling me “start with light weight (20 lbs)”… after a couple of reps, I got the 15 lbs dumbbells and thought, “Well, there is a lot of room for improvement.”

Carolina (C): It was one of the Saturday morning classes with a lot of cardio exercises and a lot of planks. I really enjoyed it.

What do you like most about CrossFit?

JC: It is a high intensity fitness program that incorporates functional exercises from different sports that will bring you to a level never imagined before.

C: It is very comprehensive and improves your fitness by strengthening different aspects (including cardio, strength, agility and flexibility).

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

JC: Anything that incorporates cardio exercises. Also, I like burpees and thrusters.

C: I also prefer the cardio exercises, including running/rowing/burpees and box jumps.

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

JC: I am stronger and more flexible, and have more stamina and endurance. It really helped me for other sports like tennis or soccer.

C: My fitness level, strength and endurance have improved greatly which helps me a lot to perform better also in other sports (Tennis and running).

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

JC: After a year I am able to do handstand push-ups and double-unders. Goals: butterfly pull-ups, muscle-ups, handstand walking, … lots of room for improvement.

C: There is much room for improvement… Handstand, 30inch box jumps and unbroken double unders are definitively on the list.

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

JC: I do not feel so tired, so I am in a better mood the whole day, and able to perform better at work. Our kids are getting bigger and heavier, so getting stronger helps to carry them around.

C: My endurance and posture have much improved. I would sometimes get back pain from too much sitting/standing or a wrong movement at work or at home. That has completely resolved.

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

JC: Just do it! You will not regret it. Best advises would be: 1) think about correct form before trying to move heavy weights; 2) do not confuse soreness and pain, because if you feel sore, you can still exercise, but if you are in pain, it is better to avoid painful movements.

C: CrossFit is for everybody, no matter what your current fitness level is. Just go at your own pace. The coaches are great and guide you through the workout, so that you don’t overdo it, but still are pushed to your limits. The group workouts are very motivating and if you are consistent, you will improve rapidly.

We are so proud of all of our athletes and the commitment to their goals and their health every day at Foxcroft and Razorback CrossFit. They display determination and hard work, and in turn, our athletes are becoming healthier, stronger, quicker, and developing their overall fitness.  This incredible group of athletes in our growing community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better every day.  As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our December installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Ryan Mahoney. Ryan  started CrossFit for a change of pace. He was tired of doing the standard cardio and weight workouts and just needed a spark.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"I don’t remember the specific workout but I do remember it included burpees and rowing, both of which made the workout very challenging. I remember thinking after the workout that I had lots of work to do in order to get into the shape needed to keep up in the class."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I like the fact that it’s always different and you get out what you put in. Not only do the coaches push you, but you have to learn to push yourself and the older we get the harder it is, so that aspect keeps it challenging."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"Fight Gone Bad is definitely my favorite workout. In workouts like this, the weight you are moving doesn’t matter. You can lift 10lbs or 150lbs and just the cardio aspect and the high intensity is going to give you a great workout."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"My ability to complete intense workouts in a short period of time has definitely increased and that was a goal of mine when going in so it’s giving me what I asked."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"My main goal was just to spice up my workouts, meet new people, and learn a different perspective on working out. The people I have met are awesome and we all push each other regardless of fitness level and have a good time. When working out is fun, and you enjoy the people, it makes it easy to attend regularly!"

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"I like the fact that my wife participates occasionally and that makes it fun. I enjoy working out with her and us pushing each other. I also feel I am getting the most out of the time spent at the gym. With two kids we both need to maximize our time in the gym and get the most bang for our buck and CrossFit has helped us accomplish that goal."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"I would say go for it. Lots are scared of CrossFit because of what they hear or what they have witnessed, but I assure you these workouts will surprise you and give you a different perspective. No one I have encountered are here to push you to compete or put you in an uncomfortable situation. From beginner to expert, everyone who attends supports and pushes one another within their respective fitness level and everyone uses good safe judgment on what a person can achieve. The coaches are excellent and will take time aside to make sure you are executing the workouts in a safe manner. Best of all, the pace of one does not impede the rest of the class."

The commitment that each of our athletes at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft shows each day enables them to accomplish goals that they set and to make healthy lifestyle choices everyday. Their determination and hard work is displayed as they become healthier, stronger, quicker, and improve their overall fitness. This incredible group of athletes in our community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better each day. As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For the November installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Craig Boes. Craig started CrossFit in June, 2016. He works from home and was looking for an avenue to get out of the house and meet people in a setting that would be fun, but that would also better myself.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"Not exactly, but I do recall that at the time we were doing a lot of strength exercises that involved the barbell.  At first, that was a little intimidating as I had to train my mind as well as my body to complete some of those movements.  Afterward, I felt uplifted by the support of coach J.D. and other members as they were very helpful, patient, and encouraging."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I like that anyone, no matter what skill level or physical condition can participate.  The program and workouts are designed to be flexible to one’s own abilities.  You can always push yourself to work harder and you see results incrementally as you add weight to your workouts or complete them faster."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"My favorite exercise is the back squat, probably because I never spent much time working on my legs prior to CrossFit.  Besides that, I enjoy any workout where we work as partners or have a good class turnout because I do my best when we work together."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"I’ve lost 20 pounds since I’ve started CrossFit and have built muscle too.  I even pulled out some old clothes that I’d almost given up on being able to fit in again.  I’m also more productive outside of CrossFit because I feel better."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"My #1 goal was always to show up and don’t quit.  That seems pretty simple, but showing up is really the hardest part and what keeps most of us from realizing our potential.  I am a better planner now so that I can fit this into my day.  A few of the short term goals I have are to bench press 175, deadlift 315, and back squat 205."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"CrossFit makes me feel better physically, and mentally more alert and confident.  For me, feeling better improves how I interact with others and makes me a more productive employee.  It gives me the stamina to more effectively juggle family and work responsibilities.  I still like my junk food, but feel less guilt about it now."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"I would advise everyone to try at least 2 or 3 classes.  It’s a great opportunity to meet people, ask questions, and get a great workout!  I’ve been a member of the Club for 4 years and never really put much thought or hard work into any of my workouts.  I attribute that to a lack of direction, accountability, and knowledge of the gym’s resources.  CrossFit takes the dread and thinking out of the equation by making it fun, planning the workouts for you, and motivating you to push yourself harder than you would ever do on your own.  There are times to available to fit almost anyone’s schedule.  Personally, I attend anywhere from twice to 6 times a week, so you can put in as little or as much time as you want and still benefit.  All of the coaches are extremely supportive and fun to work with and I give credit to J.D., Ben, Steven, and Anna for keeping me motivated and improving my performance."

At Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft, we are given the privilege of coaching an amazing group of athletes.

Our October Member Spotlight is Mike Loy. Mike started CrossFit about 2 1/2 months ago. He started because it has well-rounded health benefits compared to walking, golfing, and biking. Also because Ben and Steven will not let you drink beer during class.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"I don't remember the exact workout, but it did remind me of first “Two-a-days” in HS football. Somehow I made it through! The positive spirit of everyone made it easier!"

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"Despite being at back of pack during WOD, it refreshes you mentally."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"Hmmm? Front Squat is not one of them! Calorie Rowing."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"Have more energy and mental focus."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"Trying to coordinate an uncoordinated body to do the lifts (squats) properly."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"I've spent 30 years on my feet for 10+ hours a day, over the past 2 years, I have been office bound. CrossFit has been a wonderful Ying/Yang of Physical/Mental."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"Bring a towel, cup of water, and push a little harder each day!"

September Member Spotlight

Our athletes at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft commit to working hard everyday to reach their goals and to improve their health. It is very exciting to see everyone get stronger, quicker, and develop their overall fitness.  As our community grows, one part stays the same; we have a phenomenal group of athletes that are committed to not only improving themselves, but also to helping each other become better athletes, in all aspects of life.  We take great pleasure in the opportunity that we as coaches are given to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For the September installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Kyle Kifer. Kyle started CrossFit about 6 month ago because he wanted more out of his fitness. He grew up playing multiple sports and to this day, his profession is tied to the movement, good or bad, of the human body.

"Through my years of athletics and even through the college level, I performed many of the weightlifting moves employed by CrossFit. I have always enjoyed being fit and incorporating new challenges into a workout. I have found through the years that when I would challenge myself with only extremely technical bodyweight moves I still missed the benefits of strength training, the primary muscle groups that drive movement well. I started participating in CrossFit because I wanted to incorporate more balance into my fitness. CrossFit has combined some bodyweight moves with some inherently sound weightlifting moves and also added things like ropes, kettlebells, rings and straight bars in a new way.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"I do not remember my first CrossFit workout but I remember the community environment that was present. Crossfit has created a community that encourages others to achieve success. They have been successful in leveraging the community environment to foster their growth."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"The thing I like most about CrossFit is that it increases my work capacity. I can honestly say that I do not achieve the same work capacity on my own as I do in a group setting. I have found that work capacity, bodyweight moves and sound weightlifting can be combined in a metabolic package not only develops the cardiovascular system but the musculoskeletal system while in the process creating better proprioception."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"My favorite type of workout is a high intensity AMRAP. It doesn’t matter if it is pushing weight around or alternating between burpees, box jumps, and wall balls. Throw some high intensity cardio in there and I’m hooked."

What changes have you noticed since you you’ve started CrossFit?

"I have noticed less physical fatigue at the end of the work day. I have always been involved in staying fit, from running to workouts performed on a stability ball to focusing on creating proper movement patterns while performing exercises for the intrinsic muscles of the body. You could say I was so wrapped up in mastering the finer movements of the body I neglected the benefits of moving with power."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"My goal was to become more rounded in my fitness approach. I can say that the knowledge of understanding what CrossFit can bring to the table has accomplished that. In relation to future goals, move well move often."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"As I stated earlier, CrossFit has reduced the physical fatigue I feel at the end of the day. I enjoy working out more than I have in the past, which has led to a better quality life at work and at play."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"The CrossFit you see on TV should look different than the CrossFit you see in your gym. Don’t be intimidated by what you see on TV because not all athletes are created equal. I would encourage people to think of it this way; CrossFit had an amazing solution to a sedentary, lethargic society. Who doesn’t want to be a part of that solution. As someone who is in the industry of moving often and moving well, I would challenge you not to be intimidated by CrossFit. We have had injuries in sports for the past 200 years and before that. The popularity of CrossFit has popularized the sport of fitness to the point where injuries that are being sustained are put on the forefront. Injuries are nothing new in the world of sports and fitness. Join CrossFit with an open mind and join CrossFit healthy. The key is understanding baseline movement before beginning training. Know that you can’t bring a fitness solution to health problem."

We are proud of the determination and hard work that they display as they are becoming healthier, stronger, quicker, and developing their overall fitness.  Our growing community is an incredible group of athletes that are devoted to helping each other and themselves become better every day.  As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our May installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Suzanne Pepper. Suzanne first started CrossFit with us in February of 2015 after the birth of her first child. She then came back this past May of 2016 after the birth of her second son. Suzanne started CrossFit to get back in shape after two pregnancies close together and to lose the baby weight.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was? What were your thoughts after it?

"My first workout had a lot of burpees and snatch progressions. For the next two days, my muscles were more sore than they’d ever been! I quickly realized how out of shape I was."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I love the individual coaching you get in class, but with a community of people cheering you on at the same time."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"Murph is my favorite Hero WOD because it’s the first one I completed. My favorite move is box jumps – I can see the most improvement from continuous work on them."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"Since starting back at CrossFit this past May, I am back down to my pre-pregnancy weight and have toned up. I can see a big difference in my energy and strength as well."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"I would like to continue to get stronger and improve my endurance. I’d also like to get a strict pull-up."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"As a stay-at-home mom with two small kids, CrossFit is a great way to get some time for myself during the week. At home, it has helped my energy in keeping up with chasing after my boys."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"CrossFit is scalable to anyone, whether recovering from an injury or surgery, or looking to increase athletic performance. The coaches at Razorback CrossFit are great at modifying exercises to each person’s abilities, while still pushing you to get results. The community is awesome and everyone is very supportive of one another. I’d recommend anyone considering joining to give it a try for a couple of weeks. I’m sure they will get hooked like the rest of us have!"

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"I like sprints because I’m really competitive and always try winning."

At Razorback and Foxcroft CrossFit we are given the privilege of coaching an amazing group of athletes.

For the June installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Alan Bagley. Alan started CrossFit on March 30th this year. He had been running and was looking for a change. CrossFit seemed like a challenge and he had met several people who were very enthusiastic about their CrossFit training, so he gave it a shot.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?
"My first workout (I took a picture so I would remember) was front squats for strength and the WOD included a partner AMRAP of 3 cleans, 6 ring dips, and 9 box jumps.  After it, I remember feeling very sore!  Everyone was supportive, though, and assured me if I kept at it that would get better."

What do you like most about CrossFit?
"I really like group exercise that includes a way to work individually.  CrossFit is really relational-with coaches and students alike.  Everyone really encourages each other and hopes we can all do our best, and on hard days, finish the workout!  It also has coaching that can be directed toward the group or the individual, and I like the instructional aspects, allowing me to grow at my own pace and scale workouts to my current level."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?
"I really like double unders, not sure why!"

What changes have you noticed since you've started CrossFit?
"Since starting, I feel stronger, and the biggest change is that I look forward to making it to a 5:30 am class!"

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?
"My initial goals were to complete all the workouts, even if that meant scaling them or taking a little bit longer.  Future goals are improving pull-ups."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?
"I am proud to show my 6 year old daughter how hard work pays off, and I enjoy getting a workout in to start the day before work as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?
"Commit to a month and you won't want to stop!"

Our athletes commit to their goals and make healthy lifestyle choices every day at Foxcroft and Razorback CrossFit. They become healthier, stronger, quicker, and develop their overall fitness because of their determination and hard work. This incredible group of athletes in our growing community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better each day. As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For our May installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Ricky Brown. Ricky started CrossFit the beginning of February 2016.  He and his wife wanted something they could do together to get in shape.  "Like most people, I sit at a desk all day and you do not realize how quickly you can get out of shape!"

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"I don't remember the exact workout we did at the first CrossFit class.  But, I do remember how out of shape I felt when the class was over.  I saw other people getting through the workout a lot more easily than I did.  That feeling is what made me want to continue with CrossFit."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I like having a group of people to work out with.  Before CrossFit I would try to workout with other people but it was hard to schedule times that worked for both of us and after a few weeks we wouldn't be working out anymore.  I also like having a fitness instructor there to make sure that I'm doing the exercises correctly and motivate me when I'm tired.  I have enjoyed all of the instructors that I have had class with, but most of my classes have been with Ben.  He was there at my first class and has helped me tremendously with his knowledge and positive attitude!"

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"When I first started CrossFit, my favorite exercise was bench press because that was the only one I was pretty good at.  Now, I'm starting to like power clean because my technique and mobility have improved so much over the past few months."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"Besides the fact that I have lost weight and toned up, my flexibility has greatly improved."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"My first goal I set and reached in CrossFit was to do 5 unassisted pull ups.  Now I'm working on squatting lower which will help me in several different weight training exercises."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"Outside the gym, I have more energy and I'm in a better mood since I have started CrossFit.  Before CrossFit, I was not motivated to workout, now I feel like I missed out if I don't go to class almost everyday."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"For the people who are thinking about starting CrossFit,  I would tell them to not be intimidated. There are people at all different fitness levels in the classes."

For our April installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Amy Hudson. Amy started CrossFit about 3 years ago because a good friend of her husband's opened a box and they wanted to support his business.

A huge congratulations to Amy on winning her first Strongman competition at the beginning of the month that qualified her for nationals! We are very proud of you!

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

"I don't remember my first workout, but I know that I was completely hooked."

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I love CrossFit because it is so challenging and because results come pretty quickly."

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

"I love anything with the barbell - it's definitely what I am best at."

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"Since I started CrossFit, my overall fitness has improved greatly. I love being able to go do 5k's for fun, and have done some obstacle races that are incredibly awesome."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are

working towards?

"Right now I'm competing in Strongman. I won my first competition a couple of weeks ago!"

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

"I am lucky that my husband is fitness-oriented as well. It gives us something to do together and something to talk about, even though he's more of a powerlifter these days. I think we are setting a good example for our children, as well!"

March Member Spotlight

Each of our athletes commit to accomplishing goals that they set and making healthy lifestyle choices everyday at CrossFit Foxcroft and Razorback CrossFit. The determination and hard work that they put in results in becoming healthier, stronger, quicker, and the improvement of their overall fitness.  This incredible group of athletes in our growing community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better each day.  As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.

For the March installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Joyce Babin. Joyce started CrossFit in December 2014, primarily because she was curious and also because she could get extra points in the Holiday Fitness Challenge. She was looking to add some variety to her workouts to get a "total body workout" and ended up staying because she enjoyed the workouts, coaches, and fellow CrossFitters.

Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?

I am not sure I remember my first workout, but I think that there may have been some wallballs involved.  I had never really lifted weights before and had no clue about the strength training part.  I think the first coach I met may have been surprised that I kept coming back!

What do you like most about CrossFit?

I like the comradery of the CrossFitters.  The coaches are great and encourage participants to do their best.  The coaches and participants are friendly and welcoming.  Everyone cheers each other on.  High-fives, fist bumps and congratulations are required upon completions of WODs or when a new PR is reached.  You meet people you might not meet otherwise.  I like that the WODs are different every day.

What is your favorite exercise or workout?

None of them and all of them! When I see some of the WODs, I groan because they may have burpees, thrusters, overhead squats or things that I do not do well.  I probably like the workouts that have running or sit-ups better than some of the others.  Because the workouts are different every day, if you do not like a WOD one day, you probably will like the one the next day.  The workouts are usually fun - a little like recess for adults.

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

I am more fit and stronger.

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

My goal is to be fitter and stronger, and maybe someday to do a real chest-to-bar and a better push up.

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?

CrossFit is a good stress release.  For one-hour, I can focus on the workout and not on the other stressors in my life.  The skills I have learned apply to everyday life.  I find myself utilizing the “farmer carry” often.

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

Join. CrossFit is for all ages and all types.  The workouts are scalable and can be adapted for most, if not all, fitness levels.  It does not matter how fast you complete a WOD or your strength training level.  It just matters that you try to reach your personal best.  As an “older” CrossFitter, I am not always first to complete – and I am not always last – but I go home proud that I have worked hard and accomplished much more than I would have otherwise.

I like working out at the LRAC because we have access to the track, good facilities and a good class schedule!

For the February installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Carrie Crownover. Carrie tried CrossFit about a year and half ago when a friend talked her into trying it.  Once she started, she loved it!

What do you like most about CrossFit?

"I have enjoyed working with the coaches at Foxcroft. They emphasize having good form on all our movements, especially with weightlifting, and they know when and how much topush you. I also enjoy the positive environment and the people who workout with me."

What is your favorite exercise?

"I was very hesitant to try CrossFit because of all the weightlifting and hearing various opinions about CrossFit. My experience has been wonderful!"

What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?

"My strength has increased since starting CrossFit, and I've noticed a difference in how my clothes fit. I haven't lost a lot of weight, but I have toned up. On the days I workout, I'm more alert, have higher energy, and my mood is better."

What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?

"Currently, I'm working on my double unders, pull-ups, and handstands."

How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life (work, family, etc.)?

"It has given me the confidence to do other things, such as trying my first sprint triathlon in June."

What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?

"CrossFit is really for everyone, those who are in phenomenal shape and those who are just getting started with exercising. It's a great place to workout with wonderful people and coaches.  Also, I'd like to give a shout out to my coaches--Mike, Joey, Robert, and Steven. They do a great job!"
