The commitment that each of our athletes at Razorback CrossFit and CrossFit Foxcroft demonstrate enables them to accomplish goals that they set and to make healthy lifestyle choices everyday. The determination and hard work that they put in is displayed as they become healthier, stronger, quicker, and improve their overall fitness. This incredible group of athletes in our community is devoted to helping each other and themselves become better each day. As coaches, we feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to work with so many like-minded, hardworking athletes to achieve their goals.
For our January installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Peggy Fletcher. Peggy started CrossFit 2 years ago, this March, after participating in another morning class and watching the CrossFit group workout. "It looked like it was the best of everything - personal training, weight training, cardio, and more bang for the buck!"
When did you start CrossFit and why?
It will be 2 years in March. I was participating in another morning class and I would watch the CrossFit group during class. It looked like it was the best of everything – personal training, weight training, cardio, and more bang for the buck!
Do you remember what your first CrossFit workout was?
I remember when I bit the bullet and decided to try it. I was nervous, but I showed up at open gym one Saturday by myself. Rusty was coaching that day and he walked me through some lifts and a workout – I joined that week. The first WOD I really remember was Murph. It was only a few weeks after I joined. I remember thinking I might just die. :) I finished it, probably scaled beyond recognition, but I finished.
What do you like most about CrossFit?
The group atmosphere. The group & coaches get more out me than I ever thought I could do! I couldn’t do it without them and I wouldn’t want to. I will never be the strongest and I may always finish towards the back of the pack, but I will finish and maybe I’ll make someone else feel good about their score or time.
What is your favorite exercise or workout?
Probably back squat. It is my strongest lift, not as technical and it makes me feel successful. I see the work pay off the most in that particular lift.
What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?
At 48, I am the strongest I have ever been and my strength has doubled in every lift since I started. My friends and colleagues see me as fit – really, me?!
What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?
I was not an athlete growing up and I have exercised sporadically as an adult for one reason or another. So, I think the most important accomplishment for me is that fitness is now a routine part of my life. It is a focus for me and I can’t see it changing now. I took my jump rope when we were traveling over New Year’s and I used it!! If I can keep getting a little faster and a little stronger, I’m good with that. Maybe pull-ups, someday, somehow.
How has CrossFit helped you in your everyday life?
Life is all about change and balance and CF supports that well! I work out because I enjoy eating and drinking and CF keeps me in check. And, I sleep so well now! It is also nice to be able to open my own jars and lift my own stuff.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?
Just come try it. You do not have to know anyone or come with a friend; we will be your friend & support you. If I can, you can.
