At Razorback and Foxcroft CrossFit we are given the privilege of coaching an amazing group of athletes. We find pride in being alongside an athlete to coach and encourage them from the time they join CrossFit to each accomplishment they achieve, whether it be in the gym or not. We strive to deliver a program that provides a route for our athletes to succeed and it shows when an athlete puts in 110% every training session to ensure they are hitting their goals.
For the December installment of our Member Spotlight, we introduce Charlie Van Deventer. Charlie started CrossFit 4 months ago, by accident. He wasn’t exercising much, but the need to improve his fitness had been weighing on his mind for a while. Charlie bumped into a few of the guys who regularly attend the morning session and they encouraged him to join them for a work out.
What was your first CrossFit workout?
"I don’t remember the workout; I remember the coach being the only one there when I arrived. When I told him I was looking for the group that exercised in the mornings and he replied, “for CrossFit?” I just about passed out. That was the moment I realized I had agreed to participate in a CrossFit session! I’ve never been much of a runner and felt like I was going to throw up after the 400m warm up run. Fortunately, my pride kept that from happening and I kept coming back."
What do you like most about CrossFit?
"The variety of the workouts is extremely helpful for keeping things interesting. Every exercise can be scaled to accommodate anyone’s current fitness level. (I’ve done a lot of scaling these last few months.) The other thing that has been great is the people – participants and coaches. Everyone is unbelievably welcoming, encouraging, and very understanding that it takes a while for new people to get the hang of things."
What is your favorite exercise or workout?
"Any workout that we just completed is definitely my favorite. I also like the workouts that don’t involve running. Did I mention I’ve never been much of a runner?"
What changes have you noticed since you’ve started CrossFit?
"My overall energy level has improved. The simple fact that I’ve exercised routinely for four months and still look forward to it has been a welcome change. Even though it’s a little tough to crawl out of bed some mornings, I’ve never regretted going when the workout was over."
What goals have you accomplished and what are your next goals you are working towards?
"I intentionally started with pretty low weight and concentrated on trying to get the form right for each exercise so that I wouldn’t injure myself. I’m just looking for small, incremental gains that eventually lead to the first time I can do a double under with the jump rope, a muscle up, or run a mile without being completely winded."
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit, or someone who is thinking about joining?
"The guys who encouraged me to try CrossFit said that most people think you need to be in shape before starting, but they assured me that if I would show up for the workouts, I would get in shape. That’s been happening. You don’t need to be a great athlete to do CrossFit. Just show up with a willingness to try and give it a go."
